The most beautiful, perhaps the only beautiful building in Haiti.
This was the building that encased the identity of a country, it was one that every Haitian identified with as “theirs” and it was magnificent without being pompous. The graceful structure was imposing without being ostentatious, just like its people, Haiti had a building with dignity. It was built in 1918.
What was once the heart of a nation is now gone…succumbing to a cheap, treaterous blow from nature. Nature has never been kind to these people. This is a country that has seen more calamity than any other on earth, yet the people maintain a quality about them, a charm and a resolve to continue, to lift themselves up from their bleak surroundings and overcome adversity.
We as Americans can identify with that resolve, we can empathize with the Haitian people because we as a country have also seen the effects of nature and calamity. We are however, a country with resources and we draw upon these natural resources to extract wealth and prosperity. Unfortunately the Haitian people inherited a piece of real estate that was devoid of any gifts from nature.
Not only are the people of Haiti deserving our help in this time of need, but we have a moral obligation to assist in lifting them out of their morass, to bring them into the fold of prosperous nations. Yes, it is going to cost money but it is worth it.
Long after the rescue teams, the emergency medical and disaster relief personnel are gone, we need to insist on continuing the help. Haiti needs infrastructure, they need sources of employment, they need urban planning and they need housing. Re-forestation is on top of the list and education right up there with it.
