Almost unanimous repudiation
This is one time he is going to have a difficult time surviving the onslaught of repudiation that is coming from both the left and the right. Rush Limbaugh has repeatedly made outrageous and irresponsible statements in the past. He has gotten away with it because we, as a nation hold the FREEDOM OF SPEECH as one of our dearest and most valued principles. But in retrospect, most of his statements have been almost borderline treason, inciting riots and civil disobedience, he has never stepped away from racism, often exploiting the racial, ethnic and religious differences in our country.
This time he went a little bit too far. With the comments he made about not donating to help the people in Haiti, he has sealed his fate. He is now the official purveyor of hatred and racism, insensitivity and lack of compassion. What would follow? I would not be surprised if the sponsors of his show would start pulling out like they did with Glenn Beck. At least they should. He has enough money and should be deprived of making himself so controversial in order to make himself richer.
With Pat Robertson it is a different story. I think that his 700 club is now down to 199 because even his followers have seen the irrationality of his way of thinking. Even stout, rabid Evangelicals are criticizing him for saying that the Haitians deserve their fate because they made a pact with the devil. That is so crass, so totally absurd that he has gained the repudiation of both the secular and the religious people of this nation. How long are we Americans going to allow Robertson and Limbaugh to spew such crap?
On other news:
Uganda’s Catholic Bishops have come out against the anti-gay bill that could impose the death penalty for homosexuals in Uganda. Citing the Bible, Dr. Cyrian Kizito Lwanga, the Archbishop of Kampala said that the bill “Does not pass a test of a Christian caring approach to this issue.”
The Senate Armed Services Committee will hear from top Defense Department officials later this month on the military’s “don’t ask, don’t tell” policy. The committee will hear from top officials on the ramification of repealing the ban on gay and lesbian troops serving openly in the military.
