What did I think of the President’s State of the Union?
President Obama was in great form last night. He did what he does best. He is an excellent orator and so very eloquent. His speech was almost flawless in the delivery, the content and the tone. He did get in a few jabs that needed to be in there, like the criticism of the Supreme Court decision to allow unlimited spending on political campaigns and he did admonish the Republicans for carrying on a very destructive agenda of sabotage and non-cooperation. I am not so sure that he was strong enough on this point. As I said earlier, he needed to put on his fighting gloves and go for it. The Republicans have no intentions of cooperating with this President on any and all of his efforts to correct the problems and the mess they left behind during the last nine years. He did make sure that he mentioned the mess he inherited and that is something that needs to be driven home even more relentlessly.
The rebuttal by Republicans was done by the newly elected Governor of Virginia and it was pathetic, both in content and delivery. I was not impressed.
I say that the Republicans have no intentions of abandoning their “say no” to everything by observing how they sat stoically and did not applaud. The body language told everything. They will continue with their obstructionist strategy and hope that it will continue to benefit them. But at this point, it is going to be a little bit more difficult for them because they are not going to be able to oppose some of the things the President proposed simply because it is either in favor of the middle class and against bankers, insurance companies and Wall Street; and because the Republicans have outspent their political capital at this point by standing in the way of recovery and the public is aware of it.
One long overdue issue the President mentioned in his State of the Union address last night President Obama pledged to work with the Congress and military this year to repeal "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" (DADT)
