What has happened to the Grand Old Party of Lincoln?
The Republican Party is in shambles;
anybody that has been paying attention in the past few years can easily
recognize this fact.
It all started with DEAR LEADER
REAGAN with his Ayn Rand based economic ideology and his disdain for anything
progressive. Arguably one of the worst Presidents we ever had he set the
Republican Party on a path to destruction, most likely that was not his
intention…just the contrary, he thought that by dominating the political arena
that America would return to its roots…its 19th century roots.
The divisions Reagan initiated
were wide and far ranging, from wealth redistribution to racial divides, from
religious acrimony to empowering the Evangelicals. This is where we stand
today, with half the country being misled and motivated by racial biases,
fears, homophobia and deep religious demagoguery.

Unable to
recognize the inevitable downfall, the Republicans almost handed over their
party to extremists, gift wrapped and with an accompanying card that said: the
Teabaggers are welcomed and even encouraged to seize the helm of the Republican
Party. And thus the Tea Bag movement gained quite unnecessary and unneeded
power. This take over has had a mixed bag of results; in some of the more
backward states it has caught on as the majority of the population is wallowing
in a mud puddle of ignorance and superstition…these are fertile grounds for
Republican hate and fear rhetoric.
While on the other hand, most of
America which is politically oriented somewhere in the moderate middle has
rejected this Republican-Teahadist mentality and even though they elected some
of them to office in key states…the voters are having buyer’s remorse and have
embarked on massive recall efforts.
We could have seen this coming
when Sharon Angle and other Teabag candidates were rejected in the elections of
2010; but the climate was not quite ready to reject them completely and with
decisive repulsion…but it is happening now; we have seen it in Wisconsin and
lately in the birth of the OCCUPY WALL STREET movement.
I have
said this before a hundred times: you can’t win elections if you start to
systematically and summarily throwing groups of people, minorities and the middle
class under the bus. The Republicans have done just that, from rejection of
Civil Rights for Black Americans to the denial of equal rights for gays; from
the attack to women’s reproductive rights to the effort to do away with labor
unions. It is all a concerted and organized plan that now includes the disenfranchising
of voters and sabotaging the economic recovery.
However successful the Republicans
have been…and the corporations and very wealthy have benefited from all this; the
Republicans rewarded them with obscene tax cuts and a myriad of regulations
elimination, by doing that they also tied the noose that will hang them, they
procured the nails to their coffin and it seems that it is now irreversible
because the hammer and the nails are now in the hands of the people.
This is
what Paul Krugman wrote in the New York Times:
Krugman: The GOP Is Self-Destructing
"How did American conservatism end up so detached from,
indeed at odds with, facts and rationality? For it was not always thus. After
all, that health reform Mr. Romney wants us to forget followed a blueprint
originally laid out at the Heritage Foundation! My short answer is that the
long-running con game of economic conservatives and the wealthy supporters they
serve finally went bad. For decades the G.O.P. has won elections by appealing
to social and racial divisions, only to turn after each victory to deregulation
and tax cuts for the wealthy — a process that reached its epitome when George
W. Bush won re-election by posing as America’s defender against gay married
terrorists, then announced that he had a mandate to privatize Social Security.
Over time, however, this strategy created a base that really believed in all
the hokum — and now the party elite has lost control." - Paul
Krugman, writing for the New York
Times.
