All ideologues, demagogues and power hungry hate
purveyors need a villain
We see it more often than we would prefer but
it is something as old as civilization itself; you want to get power and
fortune then you find a group of people that somehow are different and you
vilify them.
The Romans had their
Christians, the Nazi the Jews, the Communists the wealthy, the wealthy the lazy
parasites, the churches have the gays…and so it goes.
It is obvious now to a lot of people what this entails;
we have seen it repeatedly as a weapon or rallying point against our President:
he’s obviously not one of us; he’s a Muslim, a Socialist, an elitist, an angry
black man and so forth. By vilifying him they blow that dog whistle that makes
those racists salivate like Pavlov’s dogs.
Conversely, the
homosexual population will always be a minority; there is no way that the gays
will ever be as numerous as to be able to exact equality by numbers alone. So
that if any issue is put to a vote the minority would be defeated. Such was the
case with equal right for blacks until the Federal Government stepped in and
demanded full integration.
With gays, who are estimated to be by some
accounts as few as 5% of the general population or as numerous as 18% there
will never be an opportunity to bring about change through the ballot box. The
ideologues and demagogues that depend on this vilification will always blow
that dog whistle to make the dumb public hate the gays.
In Maine, Maryland, Minnesota
and Washington, voters will go to the polls to decide if gay and lesbian
couples – our friends and neighbors – are worthy of the same protections as
everyone else.
But the question is simply this: What would
actually happen if there are no gays in our society? What if everyone went back
in the closet or better yet, what if some miracle scientific discovery produced
an antidote to homosexuality?
That my friends would
not be very pretty. It would take away the most powerful tool these
Christianist homophobes have to gather their troops and remain in power and
comfort. The churches would definitely suffer from lack of adherents; the same
could be said if the war on drugs ended…where would all those law enforcement
people, those lawyers and those judges be if drugs became legalized? …Why they
wouldn’t have jobs, that what.
That is why it is imperative that we oppose any
attempt at placing on ballots throughout the states or local government issues
that would be subjected to a popular vote…the rights of man are not negotiable
nor are they to be subjected to a democratic vote…you either have civil rights
or you don’t.
